Your Day Time Skin Care Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide

There's so many opinions on what the correct order to apply your skincare products should be, and I know, it can get very confusing! It's super important to layer your skincare correctly because otherwise you could render your products totally ineffective—or worse, hard-core irritate your face.

Some common questions revolve around the number of products that should be used (a 12 step routine is definitely NOT advised!), whether sunscreen should be applied over or under other products, and what goes first: serum or toner? Face oil or moisturizer?

Most faces do far better with fewer products, so keep it simple if you're just starting out; a good cleanser, moisturiser and suncreen is all you need. If you're an avid skincare fan that regularly uses a range of products, these 7 steps are for you!

Step 1: Cleanser
It's important to start with a cleanser that cleans the skin so it's free of dirt and grime. This allows the skincare products to work best and absorb deeply into the skin.

Step 2: Toner
Choose a toner that's filled with hydrating, gentle ingredients. A toner is meant to prime the face for ingredients to be absorbed later on. Toner (like most of the steps on this list) is totally optional and if yours smells like nail polish remover or pure alcohol? get rid of it asap.

Step 3: Serum
Serums are great at boosting overall skin health - They deliver extremely concentrated nutrients, hydrators, and antioxidants that deeply penetrate the skin.

Step 4: Eye Cream
Eye creams are all about maintaining the health and thickness of the eyelid skin so that it doesn't easily lose laxity and it's smooth appearance later on.

Step 5: Spot Treatment
Remember that acne spot treatments can dry out your skin, so always apply only on spots where you need it.

Step 6: Moisturiser
Everyone, even those with oily skin, need a moisturiser in their routine! Most experts recommend that the best time to apply a moisturizer is while the skin is still damp, so the sooner you go through applying your serum and treatment, the sooner you’re able to lock in much-needed hydration with your moisturizer. If you’re using an acne spot treatment, you may want to skip those areas when applying your moisturizer to make sure the ingredients in it won’t interfere with the active ingredients in your spot treatment.

& last but certainly not least..

Step 7: Sunscreen
This should be the last step in your morning skincare routine and you should use at least SPF30! Sunscreen helps prevent premature aging, worsened acne scars, and cancer risk.
